Hello Senior Infants! Thank you so much for continuing to send me lovely photos of your work and other activities you’ve been up to!! This week’s theme is “Handa’s Hen”.

  • Talk about the numbers in the story, e.g. two butterflies, and the adjectives, e.g. stripy mice
  • Discuss the setting of the story – country, animals etc.
  • Revise the comprehension strategies ‘Prediction’, (What do you think will happen next?) ‘Visualisation’ (Close your eyes, can you imagine being there? Is it warm or cold? What do you smell?) and ‘Making Connections’ (Have you ever been do Africa? Have you ever felt like Handa when she lost her hen?) etc.
  • Recall and retell significant events and details from the story

Provide some playdough, salt dough or clay for your child to use to make models of their favourite animal from the story.

Provide junk-modelling materials for children to create their own nests and houses for Mondi.

How did the orienteering challenge go last week? Encourage your child to set up their own this week.

·        For example; Hide a soft toy hen (or other) in the outside area. Encourage your child to find the hen, Mondi, and describe where she is hiding, e.g. inside the bushes, behind the tree, under the slide, next to/ beside the sandpit, etc.

·        Once the language has been learned, ask them to hide the hen and be in role as ‘teacher’.



Small World

·        Set up a small world version of the story to encourage your child to retell it.
