We’re Learning Our Sounds!
There was great excitement in Junior Infants last week when we started working on our sounds. We have started leaning our sounds using the Jolly Phonics programme. This programme uses songs and actions to teach the 42 letter sounds. The letter sounds are organised into 7 groups and are taught in the order shown below:
- s, a, t, i, p, n
- c/k, e, h, r, m, d
- g, o, u, l, f, b
- ai, j, oa, ie, ee, or
- z, w, ng, v, oo
- y, x, ch, sh, th
- qu, ou, oi, ue, er, ar
We do two new sounds a week so have already covered s and a. Some Junior Infants have been great at bringing in items for our ‘Sound Table’ which really helps relate the sound covered to different objects!
There is also a Jolly Phonics app available to download from the App Store which I’d highly recommend as it gives the correct letter sound as well as the story, action, sound and song that your child has covered in school. Please encourage your child to go back over these at home too.
Please note that we will NOT be covering the letter formation as cursive writing will now be introduced in Junior Infants in accordance with our new handwriting policy.
We’ve also had a chance to visit the computer room this week. During our computer time we worked on the Starfall website – www.starfall.com (app also available to download) which is a great website for revising sounds as well as early reading activities. Here we are in action!
Well done to Junior Infants on a great first month in school!
Have a great weekend everyone! 🙂
