Boot by Shane Hegarty – Dublin Citywide read 2020
Since the first week of January, we have been reading the novel Boot, by Shane Hegarty in class. This book has been chosen as the Dublin Citywide Read this year, so many other 5th classes around the city are reading it too! The citywide read campaign is run by Dublin UNESCO City of Literature and Dublin City Libraries, in partnership with Hachette Childrens Books, and runs from January to March 2020. The aim of the initiative is to encourage children to read for pleasure. We borrowed the books from Raheny Library and have been working on plenty of fun activities around the story.
Boot is a story about one robot’s journey to become reunited with his owner. As we read, we are drawing a story map to illustrate the journey that Boot is making.
We have designed our own Robots, modelling them on the companion robots which are seen throughout the book
Putting our math knowledge to the test, we worked in pairs to design drones, composed of triangles and quadrilaterals. They turned out amazingly.
We are really looking forward to visiting Raheny Library on February 10th. The author of Boot will be there and we have been compiling a list of questions to ask him about Boot and his inspiration for writing.
