Active School Flag
We are delighted to be working towards the Active School Flag (ASF) in Greenlanes. This means we are trying to increase our activity both in and out of school.
We are all working hard to be as active as we can in the classroom, on the yard and even outside of school. Go raibh míle maith agaibh for all your help and support so far!
The Active School Committee got Active.
As part of our Active flag we have set up an Active Flag Committee. Students from different classes have joined together to do a survey on "what club are you in" the results are posted on our Active Flag notice board. Below are a few of our active members patrolling at Lunch break making sure everyone are outside and moving.

The Active School Committee visited each class to find out how many pupils in each class are involved in different sports or activities outside school. Results of this survey can be found on our school’s ASF noticeboard in the main school corridor.
We hope that these graphs will encourage children in our school to try new sports and clubs. We are in the middle of compiling a list of all clubs and teams available to the children around our area and will have this on our notice board A.S.A.P.
Above all, we encourage pupils to find activities they enjoy so they can aim to reach a healthy target of 60 minutes of physical activity per day!
Active Week 2017
Active Week took place Tuesday the 2nd of May – Friday 5th of May. Each child got a copy of “60minutes per day, physical activity challenge chat” – The children recorded their physical activity for the week. All the children in the school got awarded a “60minutes a day achievement certificate” – The children got this awarded to them on Friday. Go Noodle was played first thing every morning and thought out the day to keep the children active.
There was only active Homework for the week, the links to this are below!

On Friday between breaks the whole school took part in a Tug-Of- War competition. The children loved being outside watching the other classes and partaking in the games vs each other. Some of the teachers got involved too. Below are two pictures from the day but more can be found on our Facebook page.
New Basketball Courts
This year we set up our Basketball court so for P.E. and yard time the children are encouraged to play basketball. This is a great success and members from our Local sports club are coming to mark the court! Below is a picture of one of our 3rd classes playing a basketball game.

Another strand of P.E. we have been focusing on this year is Athletics. Classes have been involved in training all year for long distance running. We started running 200m and now the children are well able to run laps around our pitches. Some children have been times and their results keep.gettin better and better. Below is a picture of two classes partaking in our Athletics strand with some of the runners being on our active school committee!

The final picture is a picture taken on a Tuesday evening where four different classes are partaking in four different strands of our curriculum.

A big thank you to Clontarf GAA Club for sending Gerard Dinan who has been coaching our whole school for the whole year. Who can been see below with our children.
Another huge thank you to Clontarf Rubgy and Ray McCabe for coming to our school and coaching our house and girls tag rugby. They have a Tag rugby competition coming up in a few weeks. The boys and girls are very excited.
Bull Island Visitor and Interpretative Centre
Pat Corrigan from Bull Island came to visit us and to talk to us about the different habitats living on the Bull Island. We saw a PowerPoint on all the different flora and fauna growing and living on the Island.
We are all looking forward to our sponsored walk when we will be going down the Bull Wall! - Pictures and more information about our visit can be found on our Facebook page.
About the Active School Flag
The Department of Education and Skills wishes to recognise schools that strive to achieve a physical educated and physically active school community by awarding them the Active School Flag (ASF). The initiative is open to primary and post primary schools, special schools and Youthreach centres to apply. Help us to achieve the Active School Flag In order to achieve the active school flag we must:
- Adhere to DES guidelines regarding PE timetable provision for all students
- Teach a broad and balanced PE curriculum
- Inform and invite the whole school community to participate in the ASF process
- Self-evaluate current provision in terms of PE, Physical Activity and Partnerships
- Plan, implement and monitor improvements for each of the aforementioned areas
- Organise an ‘Active School Week’ as part of the annual school calendar
