The meeting opened with a welcome and introduction by Ronan White, Chairperson, on the purpose of Greenlanes Parent Association, and the aims for the evening:

  • to draw to parents’ attention the various projects being undertaken by the PA Committee, and
  • our desire for the parent body to get involved with the school as much as possible.

Guest Speaker: Elaina Ryan of Children’s Books Ireland

The guest speaker,  Elaina Ryan, Children’s Books Ireland, then made a presentation to the meeting about her organisation and its projects on books and reading for children, many of which schools can participate in. Do read more detail on this below, and go to www.cbi.ie.

Greenlanes Library Initiative - Book Donations and Parent Volunteers Needed

The PA is working with Cathy Atkin, Principal, to develop the library and reading stock. New shelving will be provided for the children, and the book stock will be developed and enriched. To this end parent volunteers will work on reviewing the current stock of books and identifying gaps. They will sort donated books and order and arrange them ready for use. Volunteers were sought on the night, and a number of people at the meeting came forward.

Parents can also get involved by donating books (new or in really good condition) which are suitable for ages 4 to 12 years. There may be opportunities for reading and storytelling in the future. People interested in helping should contact the PA.

National Parents Council Primary has been invited by the Minister for Education and Skills to submit the views of the organisation on “the Role of denominational religions in the school admissions process and possible approaches for making changes” to same. In advance of making this submission we are consulting parents via this survey https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/RoleOfReligioninSchoolAdmissionsThe Minister has set out possible approaches for dealing with this issue and is seeking the views of those who might be impacted by the proposed changes or those who represent them. Further information can be found here

An Open Meeting for parents is scheduled to take place at 8.00pm on Wednesday, 15th February to update parents on some of the work being done by the Parents Association Committee.
As per NPC guidelines (page 18)
“WHAT THE PARENT ASSOCIATION DOES NOT DO? The Parent Association is not a forum for complaint against either an individual teacher or parent. The Complaints Procedure is the mechanism for this.”
We are delighted to have Elaina Ryan, Director of Children's Books Ireland (CBI), as guest speaker for the Parent Association meeting. CBI is the national book organisation of Ireland, and is dedicated to ensuring that books are at the centre of young people's lives. Elaina and her team work to create awareness of the value and importance of books for children and young people.
CBI's vision is "an Ireland in which books are central to every child’s life and where meaningful engagement with books is supported by passionate and informed adults in families, schools, libraries and communities all across the island".
CBI produces excellent resources for parents and teachers to guide reading, including its Inis magazine, and reading guides. It holds an annual conference, makes the annual CBI Award for outstanding contributions to books and reading for children, and appoints the Children’s Laureate, or Laureate na nÓg. The laureate is chosen as a result of their internationally recognised body of high quality children’s writing or illustration and the considerably positive impact they have had on readers as well as other writers and illustrators. The current Laureate is PJ Lynch.
The timing of this talk could not be better, as Greenlanes starts to redevelop the school library!

As part of the Parent Talks series, the Parent Association is pleased to announce that Speakeasy training will be offered for Greenlanes parents.

The Speakeasy programme is funded by the HSE and run by the Irish Family Planning Association (IFPA). It is a two-part training designed to provide parents with the information, skills and confidence they need to talk to their children about relationships, sexuality and keeping safe.
